OTORHINOLARYNGOLOGIC ALTERATIONS ON WOMEN USERS OF COCAINE AND CRACK

The prevalence of drug users has significantly increased in the past years. Cocaine, crack and other psychoactive substances are harmful to the upper respiratory and gastrintestinal tract and can cause alterations oftenly found in medical practice. Thus, the importance of a detailed otorhinolaryngologic investigation on this population. This study took place at the Lar Preservação da Vida de Maringá, PR, a non-profitable organization that helps socially vulnerable women that are either pregnant or on the postpartum period, and has the objective of assessing the prevalence of otorhinolaryngological alterations on women that are drug/alcohol users through physical examination and their clinical history. After the analysis, we could detect an abundant symptomatology linked to the time period of substance use on the assessed women, such as: nasal obstruction, migraine, cough, dysphagia, dysgeusia, epistaxis, among others. We also found alterations in the following examinations: anterior rhinoscopy, otoscopy and oropharyngoscopy; the findings were: pale nasal mucosa, crusty lesions, fibrotic areas in the nasal septum , nasal septum deviation, inferior turbinate hypertrophy, teeth absence and mucosal erythema at the posterior oropharynx. However, the findings were unspecific with the substance type/frequency and form of use. Due to the absence of symptomatic specificity, false diagnoses can be determined, such as allergic rhinitis or rhinosinusitis. Therefore, the physician must have a high clinical suspicion regarding drug abuse and establish a good physician-patient relationship to perform or diagnose the overuse of these substances.

}, number={3}, journal={SaBios-Revista de Saúde e Biologia}, author={Taparello, Isadora and Martines Oyakawa, Marco Aurélio and Lopes Benites, Samuel and Enumo de Souza, Vitor Hugo}, year={2020}, month={nov.}, pages={3–8} }
