Tradicionalmente cerca de 200 espécies de cogumelos são uma fonte alimentar e medicinal. Estas características conduziram diversas pesquisas com foco na composição química e efeitos biológicos promovidos. Assim, este estudo de revisão bibliográfica traz uma discussão acerca da composição em bioativos, bem como os efeitos biológicos promovidos e o seu potencial de utilização em terapias convencionais. É possível afirmar que os cogumelos são uma fonte de compostos bioativos, e por isso podem ser chamados de alimentos funcionais, e os produtos elaborados a partir de cogumelos podem ser chamados de nutracêuticos. Estes cogumelos promovem efeitos biológicos e o seu consumo pode beneficiar a saúde. Nesse sentido, são necessárias mais pesquisas clínicas que indiquem a dose de consumo adequada, bem como possíveis efeitos colaterais. 


There are approximately 200 mushroom species constituting food and medicinal sources. Such characteristics triggered several research works focused on their chemical composition and biological effects. Current review discusses bioactive compounds, the biological effects, and their potential in conventional therapies. Since mushrooms are sources of bioactive compounds, they may be called functional food and the products prepared may be called nutraceutical compounds. Mushrooms trigger biological effects and their intake may be a great benefit to health. Further clinical research work is required that would indicate the adequate consumption dose and their possible side effects.
